On the first day I was blessed to visit the Harvey House Museum of Florence, Kansas. Imagine my surprise when I found out that my volunteer tour guide was Cheryl Doty's step-mother! The Harvey House in Florence was the first one to serve as both a restaurant and a hotel. It became a boarding house, fell into some dilapidation, but was purchased and restored for a museum by the community in early 1970s. Today it is furnished to the era of its hey day, with a number of donated antiques to boot. The ladies of the community still serve authentic Fred Harvey meals. Groups of 12 to 24 can call and prearrange a served meal in the original dining room of the house, made from the original recipes, and served up by a crew of local Harvey girls in uniform. This sounds like excellent fodder for a CWF road trip. Someone please tell Mary Stauffer. :)
